Abstract

Salts of aluminium having general formula Al8(OH)20X2SO4, wherein X is the salt radical of a strong monobasic acid, are prepared from basic aluminium sulphate and dialuminium pentahydroxy salts of formula Al2(OH)5X, where X is as above, by mixing aqueous solutions. Either one or both of the reactants may be prepared in situ. The product is soluble in water and may exist as a dimer or trimer. X may be chlorine, bromine, iodine, nitrate, sulphonate phenol sulphonate or arylsulphonate. Separation of the product from solution is preferably carried out under reduced pressure and low pressures, whereby water is evaporated away and solid deposited. When mixing the solution the molar ratio of pentahydroxy salt basic sulphate is not less than 2:1. Examples refer to production of aluminium hydroxychlorosulphates, aluminium hydroxy-nitratosulphate and aluminium hydroxy-sulphamatesulphate whilst other examples refer to antiperspirants, cosmetic preparations containing the above compounds.ALSO:Salts of aluminium having the general formula Al8(OH)20X2SO4 wherein X is the salt radical of a strong monobasic acid, are prepared from basic aluminium sulphate and dialuminium pentahydroxy salts of formula Al2(OH)5X where X is as above, by mixing aqueous solutions. Either one or both of the reactants may be prepared in situ. The product is soluble in water and may exist as a dimer or trimer. X may be phenol sulphonate or arylsulphonate. When mixing the solution the molar ratio of pentahydroxy salt to basic sulphate is not less than 2:1. An example refers to the production of aluminium hydroxy sulphonate-sulphates.ALSO:Antiperspirant compositions comprise salts of general formula Al8(OH)2X2SO4 in which X is the salt radical of a strong monobasic acid, a water-soluble monohydroxy aliphatic alcohol, and a humectant. The above salts may also be used as an antiperspirant when mixed with Al2(OH)5Cl. In the above X may represent chlorine, bromine, iodine, nitrate, sulphamate, phenolsulphonate or arylsulphonates; examples of alcohols are ethanol and isopropanol, and humectants are glycerol, sorbitol and propylene glycol. The salts are used in concentrated aqueous solutions and are mixed with alcohol and humectants.
