Abstract
950,104. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1961 [Nov. 4, 1960], No. 37705/61. Heading H2E. A separable connector 10 consists of an elongated insulating sheath 21 having an insulating insert block 37 positioned between its ends and having open-ended recesses 31, 32 on opposite sides of block 37, a row of elongated spring members being fixed to block 37, opposite ends of which project into recesses 31, 32 and form contact fingers 35, 34. Alternate contact fingers 35 are bent to lie on opposite sides of recess 31 being staggered and located in grooves 42, 44 so as to engage conductors 46 on opposite sides of a printed circuit board 14, Fig 6, when inserted in recess 31. The sheath 21 which may be rubber is enclosed in a housing 15 which has a mounting flange 20. The right-hand end of connector 10 is adapted to receive a second connector 11, Fig. 3, consisting of a housing 52 containing a rubber-like insulating sheath 56 and a rigid insulating insert 57 having sloping grooves 61, alternate grooves sloping in opposite directions with vertical partitions 63 between the grooves, and with a conductor strip 62 secured to the bottom of each groove. A flat multi-conductor cable 13 is inserted in the end of sheath 56, its conductors are bared, and alternate ones are bent up or down and soldered to strips 62 as at 65. When connectors 10, 11 are telescoped together, the end 66 of sheath 21 sealingly fits within the flared part 59 of sheath 56. A peripherally extending head 67 on end 66 is compressed to form a seal between sheaths 66 and 56, and contacts 34 are flexed alternately in opposite directions to engage contact strips 62. Flanges 70, 69 on housings 15, 52 abut and may be bolted together. Projections 71, 74 on housing 52 locate in grooves 72, 75 on housing 15. Alternatively, to connect two flat cables together, connector 11 may engage a connector (Fig. 7, not shown) constructed similarly to the right-hand end of connector 10 and having the conductors of a cable connected to its contacts. A double-ended version of such a connector may be used to connect together two connectors 11 (Fig. 8, not shown).
