Field of the Invention
The present invention is directed to a jack for a printed circuit board to achieve connection between various electrical appliances such as audio equipments and computers etc.
Background of the Invention
Jacks of the known type are those shown in Figs. 9(A) to 9(C), as well as Figs. I O(A) to I O(C).
With reference to the jacks shown in Figs. 9(A) to 9(Q. they are DIP type jacks in which the terminals are dipped in a tin solder bath for soldering. A pluralivy of sleeve terminals 22, plue, terminals 3. annular terminals 4. and fixed I C1 tenninals 5 capable of engaging to/disenaaain2 from the plug terminals 3.
C Z-- and fixed terminals 6 capable of engaging to/disengaging from the annular terminals 4, are provided at the bottom of the jack housing 1. Besides, a plurality of protrusions 8 for facilitating the positioning of the. ack on the J printed circuit board 7 are provided at the bottom of the jack housing 1. An opening 9 into which a plue can be inserted is provided at the front of the jack housina 1.
A pluralivy- of positioning holes corresponding to the protrusions 8 of such DIP type jack are provided on the printed circuit board 7. The protrusions 8 are inserted into the holes extending through the circuit board. and the terminals 6 are inserted into corresponding openings which extend through the printed circuit board 7. Consequently. the terminals 2 - 6 may prq:lect out from the reverse side of the printed circuit board 7. and are dipped into a tin solder bath. Thereafter, the terminals 2 - 6 can be soldered to the terminal points of the printed circuit board 7.
Figs. 10(A) to 10(C) show SMD type jacks in which soldering is to be effected on the surfaces. A pluralit,' of sleeve terminals 2a. sleeve terminals 2b. piug terminals 3. annular terminals 4. and fixed terminals 5 capable of eneaain2 to/disengaging from the plug ten-ninals 3. and fixed terminals 6 capable of engaging to/disengaging from the annular terminals 4. are transversely disposed. Besides, a plurality of protrusions 8 for facilitating the positioning of the jack on the printed circuit board 7 are provided at the bottom of the jack housing 1. An opening 9 into which a plug can be inserted is provided at the front of the jack housing 1.
A plurality of positioning holes corresponding to the protrusions 8 of such SMID type jack are provided on the printed circuit board 7. The protrusions 8 are inserted into the holes extending through the circuit board, and the terminals 2 - 6 are arranged to contact with the terminal points of the printed circuit board 7. The terminals are then made to connect with the terminal points of the printed circuit board 7 by means of solder.
In these conventional jack structures, soldering-, of terminals onto the printed circuit board 7 is inevitable. The lead contained in the solder will contaminate the environment. Besides, solderina is time-consuming and costconsuming.
The object of the present invention is to provide a jack which can be electrically and mechanically connected to the printed circuit board without the necessity of soldering.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a jack which can be electrically and mechanically connected to the printed circuit board in a stable manner without the necessitv of soldering.
Summarv of the Invention The present invention is related to a jack having a plurality of terminals extending ourwardlN. from the rear portion of the jack housing. The terminals resiliently urge against an end portion of a printed circuit board to engage with the terminal points of the circuit board, whereby the terminals can be electrically and mechanically connected to the printed circuit board without the process of soldering.
Further, in the improved jack according, to the present invention, the terminals are extended outwardly from the jack housing in two rows. The printed circuit board is inserted between the two rows of terminals such that end portion of the printed circuit board is clamped by said terminals. By such arrangement, the terminal points located on both surfaces of the printed circuit board can be electrically, mechanically connected without the necessity of solderina. Even the terminals are in great number, the intervals between the terminal points can be extended.
Further, according to an improved jack of the present invention, the tenninals are extended outwardly from the jack housing in one row, and a printed circuit board support plate is disposed oppositely to the row of terminals. The printed circuit board is inserted between the row of terminals and printed 2 circuit board support plate, such that the end portion of the circuit board is resiliently urged by the terminals.
Further, in the improved jack according to the present invention, both side edges of the jack housing are provided with guide channels adapted to receive the rinted circuit board, so that the side edges of the slot formed on the printed p t circuit board are occupied. Consequently, the jack housing can be held firmly in position in the predetermined posture, without the need to apply soldering, to effect electrical and mechanical connection.

Fias. I to 6 show a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
A plurality of terminals 2a. 2b, 3, 4,.5, and 6 extend outwardly from the rear portion of the jack housing 1. The terminals 2a, 2b, 3, 4, 5. and 6 resiliently urge against both sides of an end portion of a corresponding printed 3 circuit board, so as to be in connection with the terminal points of the circuit board. The terminals are arranged in two rows.
The portions of terminals 2a, 2b, 3. 4, 5, and 6 which are adapted to hold on to the printed circuit board 7 and to connect the terminal points 10 are "U"shaped. A guide channel I I is provided at each side of the jack housing I so as to facilitate the insertion of the printed circuit board 7 therein. A "U'shaped slot 12 suitable for receiving the jack is provided on the printed circuit board 7. Two side edges l2a, 12a opposed to each other become the guide channels I I of the printed circuit board to be inserted into the jack housing 1. A plurality of terminal points are provided on the upper and lower surfaces of the printed circuit board proximal to the slot 12 adapted to receive the jack.
The terminals 2a, 2b, 3, 4. 5, and 6 extending from the rear portion of the jack housing I resiliently clamp on the printed circuit board 7, and electrically and mechanically connect with the terminal points 10 arranged in two rows without the need of solderinc, Furthermore, a slot 12 adapted for the jack is provided on the printed circuit board. Both edges 12a, 12a of the slot are adapted to engage with guide channels I I provided on both sides of the jack housing, 1. The jack housincy I is held in position bv en(Yaging with the printed circuit board, with the terminals 2a, 2b.... in electrical connection with the terminal points. By such arran2ement. the jack housing 1 can be electrically and mechanically connected to the printed circuit board 7 in a stable manner without soldering.
Ficys. 7 and 8 show another embodiment of the jack according to the present invention. A printed circuit board support plate 13 is integrally formed with the jack housing I at the rear, bottom portion thereof. A plurality of terminals 2a, 2b. 3, 4, 5, 6 are provided in a row at the top portion of the jack housing. Since the terminals are identical to the terminals mentioned hereiribefore in shape, they are labeled with the same reference numerals and the description relating thereto is omitted. A printed circuit board 7 having a plurality of terminal points 10 provided on one surface thereof is inserted between the support plate 13 and the row of terminals 2a, 2b, 3, 4. 5, and 6, so that the terminals come to contact with the terminal points 10. Due to the resiliency of the terminals 2a. 2b..., the printed circuit board is held firmly by the support plate 13.
Even when the printed circuit board 7 is provided with a row of terminal points 10 offly. the jack can also achieve an electrical and mechanical connection with the printed circuit board in a stable manner without having to apply soldering.
4 While the above description is directed to an embodiment in which 6 terminals are extended from the jack housing to electrically connect with the terminal points of the printed circuit board, it should be noted that the scope of the present invention shall not be limited to the number of terminals.
Industrial Practicalily of the Invention In view of the above, the jack according to the present invention can serve to connect conducting wires among various kinds of electrical machines, and can be electrically and mechanically connected to printed circuit boards without having to apply soldering.
