A pair of grips 2, 3 for holding a specimen in a physical testing machine has teeth 7, 8 projecting forwardly of a multiplicity of other teeth 5,6 of smaller base cross-section. The teeth 7, 8 grip the specimen 4 before the teeth 5, 6 and are embedded more deeply. More than one large tooth such as 7 may be provided on each grip 2, 3 and each large tooth may be spaced opposite or between corresponding teeth on the opposing grip. The teeth may be integral with grips 2, 3 or may be replaceable elements.
