Abstract

949,924. Refrigerating; air-cooling apparatus; air conditioning. A. I. McFARLAN. Nov. 7, 1962, No. 42090/62. Headings F4H, F4S and F4V. In an air cooling system comprising a duct through which air is blown over finned heat transfer sections, the spacing of the fins on successive heat transfer sections is increased in the direction of air flow. As shown, a pump 26<SP>1</SP> supplies water to a water cooler 17<SP>1</SP> which forms the evaporator of a refrigerating system having a compressor 14<SP>1</SP>, condenser 15<SP>1</SP> and expansion valve 16<SP>1</SP>. The cooled water then passes through a line 55 to a first heat transfer section 40b having widely spaced fins 51 and after leaving this section passes via headers 50, 46 to a second heat transfer section 40a having narrowly spaced fins 48. The heat transfer sections are mounted in a duct 40 through which air is blown by a fan 29<SP>1</SP> so that the air first contacts the closely spaced fin section 40a where it is cooled down to its dew point temperature and then contacts the widely spaced fin section 40b where moisture is condensed therefrom. Each of the sections 40a and 40b comprises a plurality of serpentine tubes connected in parallel between inlet and outlet headers (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown) the water is cooled in a series of water coolers each of which forms the evaporator of a separate refrigerating system. The heat transfer sections may be formed by the evaporator of a refrigerating system. Specifications 826,072 and 852,119 are referred to.
