Abstract
Alpha olefins containing 3 to 8 carbon atoms are polymerized in the presence of a catalytic system comprising predominantly amorphous titanium trichloride, a monoalkyl aluminium dihalide and an alkali metal chloride or iodide wherein the aluminium to titanium atomic ratio is 1:1 to 10:1 and the alkali metal to aluminium atomic ratio is 0.5:1 to 10:1. Specified olefins are propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methylpentene-1 and mixtures thereof. The titanium trichloride may be prepared by reducing the tetrachloride with hydrogen or aluminium and ball milling the product. The aluminium compound may be ethyl, propyl or butyl aluminium dichloride or the bromine or iodine analogues thereof. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. hexane, heptane or iso-octane. Examples describe the polymerization of propylene in heptane in the presence of catalysts comprising titanium trichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride and (II, IV and VII-XII) sodium chloride and (VI) potassium iodide, and the polymerization of 4-methyl pentene-1 in the presence of a catalyst comprising titanium trichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride and (XIV) sodium chloride.
