[Also in Division F2] A press-section for a paper making machine comprises a felt 15 carrying the newly formed web 13 from the forming wire 12, a first suction roll 21 forming a first nip with a bare roll 20 to receive the web, and a second suction roll 22 forming a second nip with the bare roll and spaced substantially 90 degrees from the first nip. The felt is looped around a vacuum pickup roll 16, carried by swinging arms 17, a roll 21, an arrangement of idler, guide and stretch rolls and wringer rolls 36, 37. The web is held on the underneath of the felt till it reaches the first nip by a low-suction box 56 and a high-suction box 57. The web passes from the second nip to rollers 44,45 from where a felt 46 carries it to a second press comprising a lower suction roll 50 and an upper roll 51 urged by cylinder 55 against roll 50. Rolls 21 and 22 are urged by cylinders 28 and 33 against the roll 20. Each , end of the shaft 65 (Fig. 2) of the roll 20 is extended beyond its fixed supporting bearings 24 and has at its extremity an additional bearing unit 66. The nip lines between roll 20 and rolls 21 and 22 are straightened, if necessary, by bending shaft 65 through cylinders 70 and 80 acting on the bearings 66. Each bearing unit is prevented from rotating by an arm 85 retained between members 88. Saveall pans 29, 35 are provided for rolls 21, 22. In a modification, the orientation of the rolls 21, 22 with respect to the roll 20 is changed, for example, by rotating the rolls 21, 22 45 degrees or 90 degrees about roll 20 in a clockwise direction (Fig. 1).
