Abstract

In a method of quenching a continuous web of material to a desired temperature level, the material is contacted as it enters the quenching bath with a stream of quench medium at a controlled temperature, or where the web has been differentially coated, e.g. in the case of tinplate, separate streams of coolant at differing temperatures may be brought into contact with the two sides of the web. Temperature sensing means are provided close to the point where the coolant meets the web, whereby the temperature or volume of the coolant is controlled to maintain the desired quenching temperature. As illustrated in Fig. 1, web 11 passes in the direction shown through tank 9 fitted with adjustable overflow 41. Coolant enters through conduits 16 and 17 into quenching head 13, passing into sumps 20 and 21 and then over lips 22, 23 to contact web 11 where it enters quenching bath 10. The temperature or volume of the coolant entering is controlled in accordance with temperature sensing devices 27, 28. In the embodiment in which coolant volume is controlled, shown in Fig. 2, coolant, generally water, enters by pipe 32, while steam is supplied by pipe 31 controlled by manual valve 33. Valve 34 controlling rate of flow to conduits 16 and 17 is operated by device 29 in response to the signal from the temperature sensing device <PICT:0949291/C3/1> <PICT:0949291/C3/2> <PICT:0949291/C3/3> transmitted by line 30. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, valve 34a is manually controlled, and device 29a operates steam inlet valve 33a to control the temperature of the coolant
