Abstract

Cross-linked polyvinyl phenols are prepared by polymerizing one or more esters of vinyl phenol in the presence of a cross-linking agent and then hydrolysing the resultant product. The ester may be that of acetic, benzoic or phenyl acetic acid, and the cross-linking agent may be divinyl benzene, divinyl toluene, divinyl naphthalene, divinyl ether or methylene-bis-acrylamide. The polymerization may be effected in benzene using as catalyst azo-bis-isobutyronitrile or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. In examples the hydrolysis is effected with caustic soda in aqueous dioxan. The cross-linked polyvinyl phenols may be converted to resins having ion-exchange or chelating properties by introducing reactive groups such as nitro, amino, sulphonic acid, carboxylic acid, halogen, chloromethyl, formyl, formyl oximino, phosphoryl or diazo groups.
