Abstract

A leaded hydrocarbon fuel the exhaust from which deactivates an oxidation catalyst contained in an exhaust system until deposition thereon of 5-50% of lead is admixed with a haloalkane and subsequently decomposed in an I.C. engine to yield the corresponding hydrogen halide, the haloalkane being used in such quantity that after reaction of lead with a portion of the hydrogen halide during the exhaust gas oxidation treatment, at least 2 mols. of free hydrogen halide remain per mol. of lead halide in the treated exhaust gases. Specified haloalkanes are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl chlorides, bromides and iodides, ethylene, propylene, butylene, dichlorides and dibromides, chloroform, trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst contaminated by 5-50% by weight of lead is contacted with gaseous hydrogen halide at a temperature between 260 and 1095 DEG C., and a portion of the lead is volatized from the catalyst by reaction with the hydrogen halide. The oxidation catalyst may be supported on Al2O3, TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3-SiO2, Al2O3-ZrO2 Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2, B2O3 or HfO2. Metals which may be loaded on to such supports include V, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Pt, Pd, Os, Rh, Ru, Ir, Cu, Ag, and Au.
