948,872. Shaft couplings; rod couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961], No. 1721/62. Headings F2G and F2U. A shaft coupling comprises a driving member 1 having at one end a recess 4 of circular or other cross-section and tapering inwardly towards the end, almost half of the wall being cut away to allow the entry of an outwardly flared end portion 11 of a driven member 10 which is urged axially into engagement with the surface of the recess by a spring-pressed plunger 7 housed in the driving member 1. If the recess 4 and extension 11 are of circular cross-section, the friction between the two surfaces transmits torque to the member 10. The coupling may be employed to support a crystal of semi-conductor material while it is subject to zone refining processes to remove unwanted impurities, and the member 10 may be in the form of a stub rod and the rod of semi-conductor material may be fused axially on to the stub.
