948,778. Sliding clasp fasteners. OPTI-HOLDING A.G. June 16, 1960, No. 21208/60. Heading E2S. [Also in Division D1] Relates to sliding clasp fasteners of the kind in which a looped thread 2 of plastics material is provided on the median axis of the looped thread with fastener elements 7a and is then bent to U-shape about the median axis and subsequently sewn to the edge of a stringer tape 23. According to the invention, in a method for manufacturing such fasteners, the plastics thread is inserted in the form of a reciprocating weft thread in a warp thread shed, each side of the shed being formed by two parallel threads 8a, 8b and 9a, 9b spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the width of a loop to be formed, the spacing of the threads, of each of the two pairs of threads forming the shed being maintained at the place where the weft thread is inserted, by spacing elements, the stamping of the elements and the bending into U-shape and the shape fixing being subsequently effected. As shown, the thread is drawn from a spool 1 through a vertically reciprocating eye 4 as the pairs of threads 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b are moved towards and away from one another in a horizontal sense by eyes 5a, 5b and 6a, 6b respectively to form loops 7. An endless band 12 located on rollers 13 is provided with cams 14 throughout its periphery the spacing of which corresponds to the loop spacing of the plastics thread. A channel member 15 through which the looped thread passes is provided on one internal wall 16 with a groove 17 which increases in depth in the direction of movement of the looped thread and co-operates with stamping dies 19, which as the looped thread progresses along the channel forms the elements 7a and bends the looped thread to U-shape about the medial longitudinal axis thereof. Beyond the dies 19, a guide strip 21 guides the finished loops on to the edge of the tape 23 beneath a needle 22 of a sewing machine. A heating unit 26 in the channel 15 fixes the final form of the loops.
