Abstract
A 1-olefin having six or more carbon atoms in the molecule is copolymerized with an unsaturated polymerizable compound containing a polar substituent of formula -OH, -CN, -CONR1R2 or -NR1R2 where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals in the presence of an oxygen-yielding compound as catalyst and an aliphatic or aromatic primary or secondary alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, ether, carboxylic acid, anhydride or ester, or carbonate as modifier. In a modification of the process the olefin is copolymerized with an unsaturated compound containing a substituent convertible to a polar substituent as defined. Specified olefins are octene-1, decene-1, dodecene-1 and octadecene-1, and mixtures obtained by the Fischer-Tropsch process, cracked wax olefins and cracked raffinate olefins. The olefins may be urea-extracted as described in the parent Specification Specified compounds containing defined polar substituents are acrylonitrile, acrylamide and substitution products thereof. Specified compounds containing groups convertible to the polar substituents are vinyl halides and vinyl esters, from which the polar substituents may be obtained by hydrolysis or alcoholysis. Specified catalysts are diethyl peroxide, t. butyl hydroperoxide, di t. butyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, dimethylthienyl peroxide, dicyclohexyl peroxide, dilauroyl peroxide and urea peroxide. Many suitable modifiers are listed. Examples describe the copolymerization of urea-extracted C14- 18 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and (I) isopropanol and (II) acetone; of C17 cracked was olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of (III) isopropanol and acetone; of C17 cracked was olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and (IV) isopropanol, benzaldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetophenone, 2,5-dioxahexane and 1,4-dioxane; and of C14- 18 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of di t. butyl peroxide and acetone; the products being alcoholysed by refluxing with a methanol solution of sodium methoxide. The products may be used as lubricating oil additives. Specifications 754,773 and 777,775 also are referred to.ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and 0.01 to 10% by weight of the composition of a copolymer prepared by copolymerizing a 1-olefin having six or more carbon atoms in the molecule with an unsaturated copolymerizable compound containing a polar substituent of formula -OH, -CN, -CONR1R2 or -NR1R2 where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals or containing a substituent convertible to such a polar group, e.g. by hydrolysis or alcoholysis, in the presence of an oxygen yielding compound as catalyst and a primary or secondary alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, ether, carboxylic acid, anhydride or ester, or carbonate as modifier. Specified olefins are octene-1, decene-1, dodecene-1 and octadecene-1, and mixtures obtained by the Fischer-Tropsch process, cracked wax olefins and cracked raffinate olefins. Specified polar compounds are acrylonitrile, acrylamide and substitution products thereof, and specified convertible compounds are vinyl halides and vinyl esters. Examples describe lubricating compositions having excellent detergent properties prepared by adding to mineral lubricating oils the products obtained by alcoholysis with methanol and sodium methoxide of the copolymers obtained by copolymerizing (I) urea-extracted C14-18 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol; (II) urea-extracted C14-18 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of acetone; (III) C17 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of acetone and isopropanol; (IV) C17 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol, benzaldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetophenone, 2,5-dioxahexane and 1,4-dioxane; and (V) C14-18 cracked wax olefins and vinyl acetate in the presence of acetone.
