Abstract

Boric acid esters of polymeric hydroxyl compounds are prepared by reacting, e.g. in xylene or benzene, a boron compound (such as boric acid, boron oxide or an alkyl ester of boric acid) with a polymer obtained by copolymerizing an olefin of at least 8 carbon atoms with a polymerizable compound containing a hydroxyl group or a group which is converted, after polymerization, into a hydroxyl group, e.g. by hydrolysis, oxidation, hydrogenation or hydration. Olefins preferred are octadecene, hexadecene and tetradecene, and mixtures such as obtained by cracking paraffin wax. The other monomer may be allyl or propargyl alcohol, a vinylhalide such as the chloride, or vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or benzoate. Specified alkyl esters of boric acid are trimethyl, triethyl, tripropyl and tributyl borates. The products may be used as described in Specification 829,635, in lubricating oil and fuel compositions.
