Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0948495/C2/1> wherein the 'R's are H or hydrocarbon groups, X is a metal atom or metal-containing complex which will form a stable chelate structure with diketones, and n is an integer 1-4; and specifically bis [1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- 1, 3-butandiono] Cu11 and its Be11, Mg11 and Zn11 analogues tris [1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- 1, 3-butandiono] Al111 tris [1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- 1, 3-pentandiono] Cr111, bis [1-(31-methyl -41- hydroxyphenyl)- 1, 3-butandiono] Cu11 and tris [1-(p-hydroxyphenyl) -2- methyl- 1, 3-butandiono] Cr111. The compounds are prepared by reaction of the parent diketones with metal compounds which may be e.g. salts or acetylacetonates of Be11, Mg11, Al111, Ca11, Cr111, Mn111, Fe111, Co111, Ni11, Cu11, Zn11, Sr11, Ba11, ZrIV, Cd11, CeIV, Hg11, Pb11, ThIV, and complex ions including VIVO, VVIO2, MoVIO2, or Cu11(NH3)4. Specification 948,494 is referred to.ALSO:Adhesive compositions containing phenol-formaldehyde and/or epoxy resins and optionally e.g. superpolyamides and polyvinylformals are characterised by the presence of a compound of formula: <FORM:0948495/C3/1> wherein the 'R's are H or hydrocarbon groups, X is a metal atom or metal-containing complex or N is an integer 1-4 (see Division C2). In Example 9 an adhesive containing a phenol formaldehyde resin, aluminium powder a polyvinylformal, an epoxy resin prepared from 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl) propane, and epichlorohydrin, acetone and bis[1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3 - butandiono] copper (II) was used to impregnate a glass cloth prior to its application to bonding aluminium alloy sheets. The preparation of the phenol-formaldehyde resin is also described. Specification 948,494 is referred to.
