Abstract
In a process for polymerizing ethylene at high pressures by continuously pumping ethylene through a highly elongated tube, the improvement which comprises dissipating electricity from the surfaces of the let-down valve at the end of the tube, whereby the build up of electric charges and consequent explosive decomposition is avoided. Advantageously the valve housing is electrically connected to the valve stem by a flexible metal conductor, preferably of copper. In the example ethylene, preferably of 99.9% purity, is polymerized using oxygen as catalyst in a particularly described apparatus wherein the system or surfaces thereof may be of stainles steel.
