Abstract

Polyesters (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) are optically brightened with a 2:5-di-[benzoxazolyl-21)] - thiophene compound especially one of formula: <FORM:0947982/C3/1> where Y represents a hydrogen atom or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon residue with at most 22 carbon atoms; Y1 represents a hydrogen atom, a chlorine atom or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon residue with at most 22 carbon atoms, and Z and Z1 (which may be the same or different) each represent a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical with 1 - 10 carbon atoms. The brightening agent may be adding to the polyester before or during its shaping or it may be adding to the reaction mixture before or during the poly-condensation leading to the polyester. Specifications 879,610 and 947,981 are referred to.ALSO:Polyesters are optically brightened with a 2 : 5-di-[benzoxazolyl-(21)]-thiophene compound, especially one having the formula <FORM:0947982/D1-D2/1> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon radical with at most 22 carbon atoms, Y1 is a hydrogen atom or a chlorine atom or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon radical with at most 22 carbon atoms, and Z and Z1 (which may be the same or different) are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon radicals with 1-10 carbon atoms. The brightening agent may be applied to polyester fibres in the form of staple fibres, monofils, hanks or fabrics. The brightening agent may be applied as a solution in an organic solvent but, more preferably, is applied as an aqueous dispersion which may also contain a wetting agent, e.g. a soap, cellulose sulphite waste liquid, a condensate of formaldehyde and naphthalene or an alkylated naphthalene, or a polyglycol ether of a fatty alcohol, a fatty amine and an alkylphenol. Both treatment may be effected at 50 DEG -100 DEG C. Alternatively the aqueous dispersion may be applied at room temperature to 75 DEG C., the impregnated material dried at 60 DEG -100 DEG C. and then subjected to dry heat at above 100 DEG C. (e.g. at 120 DEG -225 DEG C.), for example by heating p it in a drying cabinet, by ironing it, or by treating it with dry superheated steam. Examples 1 and 2 describe the treatment of polyethylene terephthalate fibres and fabric. Specifications 879,610 and 947,981 are referred to.
