Abstract
Interpolyamide particles whose state of subdivision is such that they possess a high water-retaining capacity and are readily dispersible in water are made by swelling grains of the interpolyamide with a swelling agent which under the reaction conditions used does not dissolve the polyamide and then disintegrating the swollen grains mechanically. Specified interpolyamides are those derived from hexamethylene diammonium adipate and e -caprolactam and these compounds and hexamethylene diammonium sebacate. Specified swelling agents are methanol, ethanol, anhydrous methylene chloride and isobutanol and mixtures of alcohol with trichloroethylene, methylene chloride, acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone. In the examples, interpolyamides derived from (I), (II), (IV) and (V) hexamethylene diammonium adipate, e -caprolactam and hexamethylene diammonium sebacate and (III) hexamethylene diammonium adipate and e -caprolactam, in granular form are swollen with:-(I), (II) and (V) anhydrous methanol; (III) sodium carbonate saturated ethanol and (IV) methylene chloride, the products being admixed with polyhexamethylene adipamide fibres and pressed into sheets.
