Abstract

947,941. Obtaining high vacua. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 7, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 41421/61. Heading F1N. A method of evacuating a vacuum space of a vessel for the storage or transport of a liquefied gas the boiling point of which is substantially below atmospheric temperature, comprises mechanically pumping gas from the vacuum space until the gas pressure therein has fallen to about 10 m.m. of mercury, disconnecting the pump and connecting the vacuum space to a vessel containing absorbent cooled to a low temperature, until the pressure has fallen to the desired value, e.g. 50 microns, and thereafter disconnecting the vessel containing the absorbent. The latter is preferably silica gel but may be alumina, various zeolites or charcoal, and is preferably cooled to a temperature of about 77‹K. by liquid nitrogen. The absorbent may be regenerated by allowing the vessel containing it to warm up to ambient temperature and removing the desorbed gases by mechanical pumping. Alternatively, the absorbent may be removed from its vessel and allowed to warm up, the vessel remaining at the low temperature. The vacuum space may be filled with powder. A plurality of gas-storage vessels may be connected to a common mechanical pump and a common absorbent vessel.
