Abstract

A printing pattern is produced on a thermoplastic foil of polyethylene or polypropylene having hydrophobic properties by bombarding it with an electron beam variable in direction and in intensity so that the bombarded areas are converted under the subsequent influence of oxygen to areas having hydrophilic properties to which a printing liquid or dye may adhere. The foil is led into and out of a cathode-ray tube through mercury locks (see Division H1).
