Abstract

2, 5, 7, 8-Tetramethyl -2-(21-carboxyethyl) chroman -6-ol is prepared by condensing g -vinyl-g -valerolactone with 2, 3, 5-trimethylquinol at a temperature between room temperature and 150 DEG C. in an inert solvent in the presence of boron trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride. Temperatures of between 80 and 120 DEG C. are preferred and di-isopropyl ether may be the solvent. The chromanol may be oxidised with ferric chloride or ceric sulphate to 2-(3-hydroxy-3-methylcar-boxypentyl) -3, 5, 6-trimethyl benzoquinone and converted by azeotroping with benzene to the tocopheronolactone.
