Abstract

Alpha-tocopherol is synthesised by condensing trimethylhydroquinone with isophytol in presence of a BF3 condensing agent (which may be a BF3 di-lower alkyl, e.g. Et, etherate); optionally the product is converted to the acetate using acetic anhydride. An example is given.
