A moulded sole 20 of flexible rubber or plastic for welted footwear has the middle portion of at least the front part of the sole in a bowl shape open downwards and rising shallowly above the edge strip 20a by which it is attached to the welt 4 of the shoe upper thus filling the hollow space in the base of the shoe upper formed by the vamp gusset 2 and the welt, the cavity in the bowl-shaped sole piece being equipped with moulded-on supporting members 23 such as ribs or studs &c. constituting a firmly gripping tread. The depth of the sole cavity is greater than the hollow space so that there is a certain tension in the bowl 21. The supporting members designed as ribs moulded into the cavity of the sole may be deeper than the cavity and extend approximately transversely to the sole's axis. They may have a saw-tooth cross-section pointing towards the rear in the forepart and to the front in the heel portion. These ribs may be interrupted by grooves in the direction of the sole's longitudinal axis to increase the self cleaning action of the sole. In this case the ribs may be arranged in the shape of an arrowhead. At the points of transition of the supporting members into the sole recesses 24 may be provided which give extra air cushioning and ventilation. If a thick tread is not desired then the cavity of the bowl is made less deep, see Fig. 3, and cross ribs 17 and 18 are moulded into the shell so as to fill in the hollow space at the base of the shoe upper with minimum increase in weight.
