PATENT" OFFICE. I
LOYD S. MCCORMICK, 0F LE AVENWORTH, KANSAS.
COMBINATION HEEL STOP AND CUSHION.
Application filed May 29,
shoe and thereby distorting the foot and.
causing pain and inconvenience.
Incarrylng out the invention, I employ a portion of an insole having a cushion at its underside formed to lit snugly against the forward portion of a persons heel to constitute a stop or abutment, said'insole being anchored to the inside of the shoe so that it will'coact with the cushion in positively pre venting the foot from moving forward in the shoe.
The present invention should not be" con fused with the numerous arclrsupports on the market as it is not of a size or shape to conform to'the arch of the foot. Neither is it intended to be wornbeneath theheel, but, on the contrary, is designed'solely for the purpose of constituting a stop for the heel to prevent the foot from slipping forward in the shoe as above stated. In'order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had. to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the device in position in a shoe.
Fig. 2 is aplan view of the device shaped to fit into the right shoe.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the cushion.
Fig. 4 shows the opposite end of the cushion from that disclosed by Fig. 1. I In carrying out the invention, I employ a portion of an inner sole 2 consisting, preferably, of leather, although other flexible ma terial may be employed. The insole 2 is provided at its under portion with a heel stop 4 constituting an important feature of the invention. Said heelstop 4 may be made of any suitable material, porous sponge-like rubber being preferable as it is soft and comfort-able for the foot. The stop'4 is cemented or otherwise fixed to the underside of the insole 2 and is of peculiar shape in order to fit the forward portion of the heel of the user and constitute a stop orabutment for preventing the foot from slipping] forward into the narrow forward portion of the shoe. .As shown by the drawing, the.
stop 4 curves rearwardly and gradually 1922 Serial m5. 564,569.
In order to prevent the insole 2 and the stop 4 from slipping'forward said insole 2 is anchored to the shoe A by suitable means, a thumb tack 10 being preferably employed.
In practice the devices are formed to fit right and left shoes, the device shown by the drawing being formed to fit the right shoe. I
owing to the shape of the stops 4 and their adaptability to the conformation of the forward portions of the heels against which said stops abut.
It is to be understood that the device is a complete article in itself and can be readily.
placed in the shoe or removed therefrom whenever desired. In some instances an entire insole may be substitutedfor the partial insole 2, or if desired the insole may be dis-- pensed with, in which case the Stop 4 would be cemented, tacked, or, otherwise fixed to the inner portion of theshoe."
The device as a whole is simple, compact in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and. well adapted for the purpose intended, and the materials and finish of the several parts may be such as the judgment and experience of the manufacturer may dictate.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of. the device, I reserve the right to make such changes therein as properly fall within the, spirit and scope of the appended claim.
. I Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is: f
A device of the character described consisting of a resilient heel stop which is curved longitudinally and tapers towards one end, the rear wall of said heel stop extending upwardly abruptly to constitute an abutment. I I
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
