Abstract
947,475. Paper-folding machines. FRED'K H. LEVY CO. Inc. Nov. 8, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1962], No. 42275/62. Heading B6H. In a mechanism for folding signatures cut from a printed web 13, Fig. 1, and comprising a oylinder 2 with at least one tucking blade 42, Fig. 4, co-operating with jaws 36 on a second cylinder 3, the blade 42 is attached to arms 26 frictionally secured to the shaft 7 of the cylinder 2 which arms carry at their outer end a roller 33 adapted to engage a cam member 35 mounted on the cylinder 3 symmetrically with respec t to the jaws 36, such engagement causing the arms 26 to be moved angularly relatively to the shaft 7, if necessary, to position the blade 42 accurately with respect to the jaws. Such movement of the arms 26 is required, if the cylinder 3 is displaced angularly in small increments relatively to the cylinder 2, as described later, to vary the position of a fold. As shown, the cylinder 2 has two tucking blades 42, each carried by a block 43 secured at each end to an arm 26. The two arms 26 at each end of the cylinder 2 are secured by screws 21<SP>1</SP> Fig. 4, to a split bronze-bushing 21 clamped by a bolt 32 around the cylinder shaft 7 with a running fit. A split hub member 22 having an asbestos brake lining 25 is also secured to the shaft 7 by bolts 23 at least one of which has a tension spring 24. On the hub 22 are two pairs of lugs 29 the distance between each pair of which can be adjusted by a bolt 30. Held between a pair of lugs is a square part of a bolt 27, a round part of which enters a hole in an arm 26. By slackening bolts 27, 30 the hub member 22 may be adjusted as wear of the asbestos lining 25 occurs, so that the lining has the requisite frictional engagement with the shaft 7. As shown, the cylinder 2 has anvils 15 co-operating with knives 14 on a cylinder 1 to cut the webs 13 into sheets, and has the usual impaling pins 16 to take the leading ends of the webs. The cylinder 3 has two sets of jaws 36 corresponding to the two blades 42 on the cylinder 1. A cylinder 4 which takes the folded sheets from the cylinder 3 is identical with cylinder 2 except that it has grippers 46 to engage the leading ends of the sheets instead of pins 16. The tucker blades on the cylinder 4 co-operate with jaws on a cylinder 5 identical with cylinder 3 to impart a further fold. The shaft 7 of the cylinder 2 is driven by helical gears 51, 52, Fig. 3, from the shaft 6 of cylinder 1, and the shafts 8, 9, 10 of the cylinders 3, 4, 5 are driven from the shaft 7 by helical gears 53, 77, 79, 85, 84. The gears 53, 84 are axially adjustable to vary the relative angular positions of cylinders 2, 3 and 4, 5 respectively so as to alter the positions of the fold. During such adjustment, the engagement of the rollers 33 with the cams 35 brings the blades 42 into alignment with their grippers 36. To adjust the gear 53, it is keyed to a sleeve 56 fixed to the shaft 7 and is attached to a bracket 60 movable axially by a hand wheel 76. A similar adjusting arrangement is provided for gear 84.
