My-invention relates to novel means in a rotary web \printing press for taking up, within certain limits, a varying amount of material in a web between the portions which are to be printed, so as to space such printed matter. varying distances apart according to the length of sheets to be cut from the web, the printed matter on every sheet being located in the same position.
My invention more particularly includes two rotary carriers, the one serving as the impression cylinder bearing an annular series of floating web clamping jaws, and the other carrier bearing an annular series-of.

The frame of the multi-color rotary web printing press is denoted by 1. The is led from the supply roll 2 to the rewinding roll 4, successively around the rolls 5 and 6, the feed drum 7, the slack take-up roller 8, the impression cylinder 9, the roll 10, the-slack take-up roller 11 and the rolls web 3' nisms, in the present instance, includes the shafts 15 and 16, the shaft 15 having at one end the bevel gear connection 17, 18, with the web feed drum 7, and at the other end the bevel gear connection 19, 20, 21 with the corresponding end of the shaft 16. The other end of this shaft 16 has the bevel gear connection 22, 23, with the rewinding roll 14. Suitable web feed rolls 24, 25 are provided for coaction with the web feed drum 7 toensure the accurate feeding of the web to the impression cylinder 9.
This impression cylinder 9 is provided with an annular series of lengthwise recesses 26, equally spacedapart around the peripheral surface of the cylinder, forming a plurality of impression segments 27, arranged to coact with one or more form cylinders 28 to print the desired matter on the web during its passage through the press. In the present instance I have shown four of these form cylinders 28, their inking de vices being indicated diagrammatically by 29 so that a multi-color impression may be made at spaced intervals along the web.
An annular series of floating tucking blades 30 are carried by the rotary cylinder 31, which blades are arranged to be brought into and out of coaction with their respective sets of web clamping jaws 32, 32 carried by the impression cylinder 9. These tucking blades 30eare arranged equal distances apart around the periphery of the rotary cylinder 31 and are constructed, mounted and operated as follows:
Two end hangers 33, 33 for each blade are provided with trunnions 34, 34, pivotally mounted in brackets 35, 35, secured to the opposite ends of the cylinder 31, which hangers are connected by a bar 36 to which the tucking blade 30 is adjustably secured by providing the blade with a plurality of transversely elongated slots 37, through which set screws 38 pass into the bar 36. The tucking blades are thus mounted to swing on the trunnions 34, 34 and are radially adjustable on the bar 36 with respect to their cylinder 31.
At one end of the cylinder 31 the trunnion 34 is provided with an arm 39 bearing a stud or roller 40, arranged to travel in the groove of a cam 41 rotatively adjustable on the main frame by providing the cam with cars 42, having circumferentially elongated grooves 43, through which pass the set screws 44. The annular series of web clamping jaws 32, 32 are located in the recesses 26 of the impression cylinder 9, each clamping jaw mechanism being constructed, arranged and operated as follows:
The end hangers 45, 45 are provided with trunnions 46, 46 pivoted in radially adjustable brackets 47, 47 secured to the opposite ends of the impression cylinder 9 by providing each bracket with elongated slots 48,
through which set screws 49 pass into the cylinder. These end hangers 45, 45 are connected by the jaw carrying bars 50, 50, which which bars are mounted to rock in the end hangers for opening and closing their jaws 32, 32. a
The clamping jaws are rocked bodily to float them for properly receiving their tucking blade, at the web tucking operation by providirg one end trunnion 46 with an arm 51 bearing a stud or roller 52 arranged to pass through the grooize of a radially adjustable fixed box cam 53, which cam is secured to the main frame 1 by providing the cam with ears 54, having radially elongated slots 55, through which set screws 56 pass into theframe.
The web clamping jaws 32, 32 are opened for the web tucking operation by providing the jaw bars 50, 50 with arms 57, 57 between the free ends of which I locate a double cam 58 at the inner end of a rock shaft 59 passing axially through the trunnion 46, the outer .end of which rock shaft is provided with an arm 60 hearing a stud or roller 61, arranged to ride over a radially adjustable fixed cam 62, secured to the main frame, said cam being provided with ears 63 having radially elongated slots 64, through which set screws 65 pass into the main frame.
For holding the web clamping jaws nor mally closed I provide the jaw bars 50, 50 with arms 66, 66, between which a coil spring 67 is located.
The web clamping jaws are opened to release the web after the printing operation thereon, by providing a radially adjustable fixed cam 68,-overwhich the stud or roller 61 rides, which cam is provided with cars 69 having radially elongated slots 70 through which pass the set screws 71, into the main frame.
To look the web clamping jaws rigidly in position, except during their web receiving and grasping operation, I provide the outer face of one of the end hangers 45 with a groove 72 arranged to receive a locking tongue 73 carried by the inner end of longitudinally sliding bars 74, 74, which pass through the end of the cylinder and are connected at their outer ends to a two armed rocking lever 75, 76, pivoted at 77 to a stud 78 carried by the cylinder. A. coil spring 79 is located between the lever' arm 76 and the cylinder, tending to hold the looking tongue 73 in engagement with the groove 72. The clamping jaws are thus locked against relative movement with respect to the cylinder during the printing operation, thereby holding the web snugly in positionagainst the impression segments.
To release the clamping jaws to permit them to be floated into proper coaction with their tucking blade to clamp the web, I provide the lever arm 76 with a stud or roller 80, arranged to ride along the radially adjustable fixed cam 81 secured to the main frame, said cam being provided with ears 82 having radially elongated slots 83 through which the set screws 84 pass into the main frame.
It will thus be seen that the clamping jaws of each set are not only mounted to swing on their trunnions for floating them into proper coaction with their tucking blade, but that theyare also radially adjustable to bring them into roper position with respect to the saidtuo lg blade, the jaws being also opened and c osed at the properintervals for receiving and releasing the web and also being hel against relative movement at the roper time irrespective of their radial ad ustment.
The impression segments 27 ,bf the 1mpression cylinder 9 are removably secured to the cylinder by screws 85, said segments being faced with suitable pliable material vide for taking up more or less material between the impression portions of the web, it being understood that the controlling cams for the jaws and blades are also adjusted to keep the parts in their proper operative relationships.
Theweb, as it enters the press, is fed at a predetermined speed by the feeding drum 7 and its coactin feed rolls 24, 25. The
web passes aroun the take-up roll 8 and from thence to the impression cylinder 9 where the desired amount of material is forced inwardly by each tucking blade into its set of web clamping jaws, the blade and jaws being floated into position for proper coaction. As each blade is withdrawn from its jaws, the jaws are brought together to grasp the material between them. The jaws are then looked against relative movement with respect to the cylinder as theweb is carried by the cylinder under the printing forms to receive the impressions upon the portions of the web which are held snugly down on the impression surfaces of the cylinder, to ensure the best possible printing. After the printing operation is completed, the clamping jaws are released and the web is rewound on the roll 4, the web passing around the take-up roll 11 in its progress from the impression cylinder to the said rewinding roll. The web rewinding mechanism may be driven at .a surface speed slightly in excess of that of the web feeding mechanism so as to impart proper tension .to the web as it is being rewound.
From the above description it will be seen thatI have provided a. simple and effective means for var ing the 5 aces be tween successive compiete printe im ressions on the web, to suit different lengt s of sheets to be cut therefrom, thereby ensuring the proper positioning of the printed matter on all of the sheets. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced im ression surfaces, means for forcinga pre etermined amount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces, and means carried by the cylinder for holding the web snugly against the im ression surfaces during the printing operatlon.
2. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, means for forcing a predetermined amount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces. and means carried by the cylinder for holding the web snugly against the impression surfaces during the printing operation comprising, an annular series of clamping devices arranged to grasp and hold the forced-in web material.
3. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, means for forcing a predetermined amount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces. and means carried by the cylinder-for clamping said forced-in web material and holding it during the printing operation.
4. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, means for forcing a predetermined amount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces, means carried by the cylinder for clamping said forced-in web material and holding it during the printing operation, and means for adjusting the relationship between the web forcing-in and clamping means, whereby more or less web material may be forced in and clamped between said impression surfaces.
5. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, tucking blades for'forcing a predeterminedamount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces, and clamping jaws carried by the cylinder for clamping said forced-in web material and holding it during the printing operation.
6. In a rotary web printing press, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression. surfaces, tucking blades for forcing a predetermined amount of the web material into the cylinder between said impression surfaces, clamping an annular series of web clamping devices carried by said cylinder between said segments, and means for forcing the. web material into said clamping devices.
8. In a rotary web printing press, an I annular series of removable spaced impression segments, pliable impression members carried thereby, an annular series of web clamping devices carried by said cylinder between said segments, and means for forcing the web material into said clamping devices.
9. In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, an annular series of web clamping devices carried by one cylinder, and an annular series of coacting web tucking devices carried by the other cylinder.
10. In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, an annular series of web clamping devices carried by one cylinder, an annular series of coacting web tucking devices carried by the other cylinder, and means for adjusting the clamping devices radially with respect to their cylinder to take up more or less of. the web material.

In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, an annular series of web clamping devices carried by one cylinder, an annular series of coacting web tucking devices carried by the other cylinder, and means for adjusting the tucklng devices radially with respect to their cylinder to take up more or less of the web material.
12. In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, annular series of coacting web tucking and clamping de vices carried by their respective cylinders, and means for adjusting the clamping devices and the tucking devices radially with respect to their cylinders to take up more or less of the web material.

17. In a rotary web print-ing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders and annular series of coacting floating tuckin blades and floating clamping jaws carried y their respective cylinders.

In a rotary web print-ing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, annular series of coacting floating tucking blades and floating clamping jaws carried by their respective cylinders, and means for adjusting the jaws radially with respect to their cylinder to take up more or lessof the web material.
19. In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals com ders to take up more or less of the web material.

In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals comprising, two rotary cylinders, annular series of coacting floating tucking blades and fioating clamping jaws, carried by their respective cylinders, and means for adjusting the jaws and blades radially with respect to their cylinders to take up more or less of the web material.

In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals between the impression portions of the web comprising, an impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, an annular series of web clamping jaws located between said impression surfaces, and a rotary tucking blade carrying cylinder having an 'annular'series of tucking blades arranged to coact with said web clamping jaws.
22. In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in the web at spaced intervals between the impression portions of the web comprising, an impression cylinder having an annular series of s aced impression surfaces, an annular series of web clamping jaws located between said impression surfaces, arotary tucking blade carrying cylinder having an annular series of tucking blades arranged to coact with said web clamping jaws, and means'for adjusting the jaws radially with respect to their cylinder to take up more or less of-the web material.
23. In a rotary web printing ress, means for taking up a predetermine amount of material in the web at spaced intervals between the impression portions of the web comprising, an impression cylinder: having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, an annular series of web clamping aws located between said impression surfaces, a rotary tucking blade carr ing cylinder having an annular series 0 tuckin blades arranged to coact with sald we clamping 'aws, and means for adjusti-n the blades radially with respect to their cylinder to take up more or less of the web material.

In a rotary web printing press, means for takin u a predetermined amount of material in t e web at spaced intervals between the impression portions of the web comprising, an'impression cylinder having an annular series of spaced impression surfaces, an annular ,SBIIBS of web clamping jaws located between said impression surfaces, a rotary tucking blade carr ing cylinder having an annular series 0 tucking blades arranged to coact with said web clamping jaws and means for adjusting the jaws and blades radially with respect to their 0 linders to take up more or less of the we material.
25. In a rotary web printing ress,. an impression cylinder having an annu ar series of spaced impression surfaces and recesses,

In a rotary web printing press, means for taking up a predetermined amount of material in a traveling web at spaced intervals along the same comprising, an impression cylinder, means for passing the web around the same, radially adjustable web clamping jaws on the impression cylinder, a coacting cylinder, and radially adjustable web tucking blades carried thereby and coacting with the clamping jaws to tuck the web thereinto.

In a rotary web printing press, means for takin up a predetermined amount of material in a traveling web at spaced intervals alon the same comprising, an-impression cy inder, means for passing the web around the same, radially adjustable web clamping jaws on the impression cylinder, a coacting cylinder, radially adjustable web tucking blades carried thereby and coacting with the clamping jaws to tuck the web thereinto, and means for locking the clamping jaws against relative movement during the printing operation.
30. In a rotary web printing ress, means for taking up a predetermine amount of material in a traveling web at spaced intervals along the same comprising, an impression cylinder, means for passing the web around the same, radially adjustable web clamping jaws onthe impression c linder, a coacting cylinder, radially adjusta le web tucking blades carried thereby and coasting with the clamping jaws to tuck the web thereinto, and means for locking the clamping jaws against relative movement during the controlled locking device.
