Abstract

947,296. Grinding. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 3, 1962, No. 25348/62. Heading B3D. Two members 6, 7, Fig. 1, joined together by a strip 16 overlapping both members are separated by grinding away the strip without removing material from either of the members. As applied to the compressor casing 7 of a turbo-jet engine circumferential strips 16, 17 join portions 6 and 8 to the casing 7 which is itself formed of separable abutting halves 9, 10 joined at diametricallyopposed longitudinal edges 12 by overlapping strips 15. The assembly is mounted on a frame 21 having support rollers 22 and manually-operated frictional contact roller 24 whereby the assembly may be rotated about its axis 14 during grinding of the strip by a wheel 27 carried by a support 42 pivotable about a horizontal axis normal to the axis 14. The support 42 is carried by a first slide 30 by which the wheel and its compressed air motor 51 may be moved towards and away from the work and by a second slide 29 traversable by a lead screw operated by a handle 32. The wheel support 42 is resiliently urged towards the work by springs 49, Fig. 2, but may be retracted therefrom by sliding along the square shaft on which it is mounted for pivotal movement about the shaft axis, a clamping screw 39 being provided to secure the shaft and wheel in the desired angular position relative to the work. A depth gauge 54 having a clamping screw 56 is adjustable by a knob 57 to set the required depth of cut whereby the strip may be ground away completely, the gauge contacting the casing and preventing further grinding thereof. The wheel has a width at least equal to that of the strips 16, 17, and may be frustoconical. The apparatus may be modified to deal with work in which the axis 14 is vertical. The driving motor 51 is controlled by a valve 53.
