Abstract

947,292. Methods for washing bottles. BARRY-WEHMILLER MACHINERY CO. Feb. 23, 1962 [March 1, 1961], No. 7113/62. Heading B8T. A method of washing bottles internally by the action of a jet of working fluid under pressure includes moving a group of jets in a path adjacent a series of moving inverted bottles in timed relation thereto, registering the jets with successive groups of bottles of the series and controlling the supply of washing fluid to the groups of jets in predetermined sequence and in intermittent timed relation to inject intermittently washing fluid into the successive groups of bottles while in motion. The bottles are deposited in the pockets 15 of an endless conveyer 14 and whilst inverted washing fluid is injected into each bottle from a travelling spray jet device 17. The latter comprises a plurality of bottle guides 75 supported in a carrying frame, which is suspended by means of pins 58 from an oscillating crank mechanism 61, 62, 63, 64. Each guide 75 has conical pockets 74 (not shown) with a bottom aperture in each to register with the mouth of the inverted bottles. The device 17 is provided with two groups of headers extending inwardly from opposite side channels 52, each group of headers carrying a plurality of spray nozzles spaced along its length and matching the apertures in the pockets 74 of the guides 75. The device 17 works in conjunction with a stationary exterior spray head 18 and is associated with an assembly 19 of cam actuated valves through a plurality of flexible conduits 20, 21, the valve assembly 19 and spray 18 being connected in the washing fluid system. The device 17 and crank mechanism 61, 62, 63, 64 are actuated through a cam-crank with push-rods mechanism 67, 68, 69, 70, driven by a motor 72. The washing fluid after draining from the bottles is collected in a pan 29 and drained through a strainer outlet 30 to a sump 26 where it is admitted to a filter unit 25 for recirculation.
