Abstract
947,141. Percussive drills; inserting or extracting electrical terminal pins. CAMBRIDGE THERMIONIC CORPORATION. Sept. 13, 1962, No. 34957/62. Heading B4C. An impact tool, such as for inserting or extracting electrical terminal pins 65, comprises a frame 12, a longitudinally-slidable shaft 10 located in a normal position by spring means 18, 19, and a spring-driver's hammer 30 for delivering a hammer blow to the shaft when the shaft is displaced a predetermined distance in either direction from its normal position, the force of the blow being applied in a direction opposite to that of the displacement of the shaft. The shaft 10 is located in its normal position shown by means of the springs 18, 19, the adjacent ends of the latter abutting a split ring 22 located in a groove in the shaft, the other ends of the springs abutting shoulders 25, 26 formed in the frame 12; the frame is made in three separate portions 14, 15, 16 to facilitate assembly. The hammer 30 which is located in its normal position by means of springs 32, 33, is provided with a bore 40 in which a latch member 42 is located for co-operation with a groove 45 formed in the shaft 10. The latch is formed with a bore 43 large enough for the adjacent reduced portions of the shaft to pass through and, in the normal position of the tool, is held within the groove 45 by means of a spring 47 thus locking the hammer and shaft together. In operation, a terminal pin 65 is inserted into a holder 60 attached to the end of the shaft 10, the pin then being pressed against a workpiece so that the shaft, together with the hammer, move longitudinally until a projection 46 on the latch engages a cam surface 51 and releases the latch so that, under the force of the now compressed spring 33, the hammer rapidly slides down the shaft and strikes a shoulder 55 thereon. To extract a pin, the frame 12 is pulled thereby compressing the spring 32 until a cam 50 causes the latch to be released and allows the hammer to strike an abutment 56 on the shaft.
