Abstract
An explosive charge comprises ammonium nitrate in solution in liquid, anhydrous or substantially anhydrous ammonia, water or aqueous ammonia and a metal having a density less than 4 which is volumetrically co-extensive with the ammonium nitrate solution. The metal is preferably magnesium, a magnesium base alloy, aluminium, an aluminium base alloy or a magnesium-aluminium alloy and may have a bulk density in the range of 0.035 to 1.0 and it may be present in an amount of 3-40% based on the weight of the whole explosive. The metal particles preferably have their maximum shortest dimension not more than 1 mm. and their minimum longest dimension at least 5 mms. the metal being in the form of machine chips, flakes, band saw filings or shredded or sheared foil. Thickening agents such as natural gums, methyl cellulose, and polyarylsulphonates may be added. The composition is preferably produced in a bucket or a plastic bag and then poured or placed in a borehole and detonated with a No. 8 blasting cap alone, or a No. 6 cap with a primacord fuze.
