Abstract

946,914. Safety belt arrangements. L. J. V. ERIKSSON. Nov. 13, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961; Aug. 10, 1962], No. 42865/62. Heading B7H. In a vehicle with one or more safety belts an electric circuit includes a first switch S1 which is closed or opened when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed to operate an alarm device or open the ignition circuit and a second switch S2 arranged to cancel the influence of switch S1 when one or more of the safety belts are in use. As shown in Fig. 2, with the safety belt not in use, a switch S2 is mounted on a plate 4 at one end of the safety belt 2 and is connected by tension spring 10 to a further plate 7 on the seat belt. When the seat belt is donned the bight in the belt is straightened out stressing spring 10 and pulling pin 11 outwards to close the switch contacts. When the tension on spring 10 is released again the pin 11 retracts opening the switch contacts. The ignition circuit, Fig. 1, includes a switch S1 which is opened by arm 13 when top gear is engaged to stop the engine unless the shunt circuit is completed through switch S2 when the driver's seat belt is being worn and either through switch S3 when the passengers seat belt is being used or through switch S4 which is closed when the passenger seat is unoccupied. In a development, Fig. 3, a time delay device is incorporated whereby the ignition circuit 21 will be opened only after a warning device has been actuated for a suitable time. When the gear lever operated switch S11 is closed and either safety belt switch S12 or safety belt and passenger seat switches S13 and S14 is or are closed current passes through alarm lamp L which flashes under the control of relay Re2 and through resistance R which heats a bi-metallic strip allowing relay Re1 to open the ignition circuit after a delay. In alternative switches S1 and S11 are controlled by the throttle or speed indicator.
