Abstract

Polyisoprene of high cis-1,4-addition content is made by contacting isoprene with a catalyst system formed by admixing (a) an organomagnesium compound of the formula R2 Mg where R is a Cl to 20 hydrocarbon radical with (b) TiCl4. The polymerization is generally effected in the presence of conventional hydrocarbon diluents, and the polymer recovered by known methods. The polymers can range from liquid to rubbery products which can be vulcanized and compounded by conventional techniques. The polymerization may be effected continuously, and the catalyst system prepared in situ. The exemplified magnesium compound is di-n butyl magnesium.
