Abstract
Glutamic acid is recovered from a fermentation medium by separating water insoluble solids, adding a water-soluble zinc salt and adjusting the pH to between 5.9 and 6.5 with ammonium hydroxide, filtering the mixture and adding an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to the residue until substantially all the zinc glutamate in the residue is converted to disodium glutamate and zinc hydroxide, filtering to remove the zinc hydroxide and either adjusting the pH of the filtrate to 3.2 to recover glutamic acid or to 7.0 to recover monosodium glutamate.
