Abstract

946,542. Vehicle bodies; suspensions. YORK TRAILER CO. Ltd. Dec. 22, 1960 [Sept. 25, 1959], No. 32715/59. Headings B7B and B7D. The side walls of a semi-trailer are constructed so as to withstand the load of the trailer, the wheel suspension members being carried by transverse members attached to the side walls. Each side wall comprises beams 12 and 14, Fig. 3, and a plurality of posts 18, a recess 16 and a shoulder 20 being provided in the beams 12 and 14 respectively to accommodate the posts which are of channel section, the base of which faces either inwardly or outwardly and to which is attached the side panels 21 which may be corrugated. The roof 25 is attached to roof beams 24 connecting the beams 12 and the floor 23 is carried by beams 22 connecting the beams 14. One end of the semitrailer is constructed similarly to the walls and is jointed to the walls by corner posts and the other end of the trailer is provided with doors 3. The trailer is provided with a rubbing plate and a king pin for attachment to the towing vehicle and a pair of retractable wheels 8. Pairs of road wheels 4, 5 are carried by suspension members attached to longitudinal beams 30 and 32 carried by transverse beams 26 and 28. As shown in Fig. 6, the wheel axles are attached by U-bolts 34, 36 to leaf spring assemblies 38 and 40, the forward ends of which are connected to hangers 42 and 52 and the rear ends of which are attached to a rocker arm 46 carried by trunnions 48 carried by a channel member 50 extending between the beams 30 and 32. An adjustable arm 56 is provided to limit the rocking movement of each unit. In an alternative construction, Fig. 8, a single pair of wheels is provided, the suspension members being connected to beams 30 (and 32) carried at the rear end by a transverse member 58 instead of the beam 28. The Provisional Specification refers to a rubbing strip 45.
