945,870. Slotting-apparatus. KOPPERS CO. Inc. Sept. 18, 1962 [Oct. 27, 1961], No. 35550/62. Heading B4B. Apparatus for slotting box blanks comprises a pair of rotatably-driven shafts 16, 17 upon which are adjustably mounted coacting slotting heads 13, 14, the head 14 having a pair of spaced-apart cutting discs 12 between which projects a blade 11 mounted at the periphery of the head 13 and comprising leading means 37 for guiding the blade between the discs, aligning means 38 for automatically aligning the blade and discs upon every revolution of the blade and cutting means 39 for slotting the blanks without metal-to-metal contact between the cutting means and discs. Each blade 11, Figs. 2 and 4, which may be formed in two segments 32, 33 as shown, or as one unit, has a tapered lead-in portion 37 including an outwardly-extending spur, a rectangular crosssectional portion 38 corresponding in width to the distance between the discs 12, a cutting arc 39 which is of reduced rectangular crosssectional area and a tapered transition portion 41. Pre-adjustment of the heads along the shafts 16, 17 may be effected manually or mechanically, followed by securing by means of bolts 43. During operation of the apparatus, any misalignment owing to axial displacement of the shafts is automatically corrected by the segment 32 on entering between the discs 12.
