Abstract

<PICT:0945636/C3/1> <PICT:0945636/C3/2> A scouring device 10 comprises a fluid permeable sponge body member 11, preferably of regenerated cellulose, one face 13 of which has embedded in it the randomly extending fibres of a low density abrasive web. Apparatus (Fig. 2) for manufacturing the device consists of a hopper 25 feeding fluid sponge forming mass of viscose 26 on to an endless belt 22 and a roller 30 for guiding fibrous web 27 on to the upper surface of the sponge forming layer which it penetrates to a depth governed by the viscosity of the sponge fluid and the height of fluid. The belt 22 carries the combination through a sponge generating coagulation and regeneration tank 32. Coagulation is effected by passing an electric current through the mass and regeneration by then immersing the coagulated mass in a hot aqueous liquid above the cellulose regenerating temperature. Other suitable sponge materials include polyurethane, plasticized polystyrene, and gelled polyvinyl alcohol. Before use the sponge member may be impregnated with a detergent-containing gel, e.g. comprising 5-6% water, 15-40% polyhydric alcohol, 20-55% water soluble soap and optionally 5-30% emulsifying agent.
