In a method of manufacturing blocks from thermoplastic materials the material is melted in an extrusion machine and extruded through a nozzle into a heated open container or mould where it is subjected to a raised temperature for a period of time so that it may become a uniform mass, and is then cooled under closely controlled cooling conditions. The thermoplastic material may be polythene or nylon and be extruded as a ribbon. To aid the degassing of the molten material it may be kept in the atmosphere of an inert gas (for example nitrogen or carbon dioxide) or under a vacuum. After being heated for the required length of time the mould is cooled at a controlled rate, e.g. a temperature reduction of 20‹ C. every two hours.
