Abstract

945,127. Disintegrating materials by explosive action. S. LEVINTON, K. J. KOEHLER, E. P. G. HARSANYI, H. SCHROPPE-ARNDT, and F. G. LIPPE. Sept. 12, 1962 [Sept. 16, 1961], No. 34788/62. Headings B1X and B2A. A method of disintegrating cellular materials capable of being poured comprises the steps of filling a plurality of pressure tanks successively with the material, closing each tank when filled, subjecting the material in each tank to a pressure and increasing said pressure in stages in accordance with the order at which the tanks are filled, and, when the material in each tank has reached the highest pressure stage, opening said tank and explosively ejecting the material from said tank into a receiver containing an atmospheric pressure. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a vessel 1 containing six pressure cylinders 2 each closed at its upper inlet 3 by a valve 3<SP>1</SP> and at its lower outlet by valve 4<SP>1</SP>. The cylinders are filled in order from a belt scale 5 by means of a rotatable hopper 6 and are pressurized in the same order by means of compressed air supplied through pipe lines 16, 17, the pressure being increased in stages in accordance with the order in which the cylinders are filled. When a cylinder has reached the highest pressure stage, the valve 4<SP>1</SP> is opened and the material is thereby suddenly ejected into a receiver 20 containing a pressure not higher than atmospheric and strikes an impact grid 21 which crushes any cells which have not been disintegrated by the sudden pressure release. The receiver is surrounded by a coiled pipe 22 to permit the disintegrated material to beeither heated or cooled. The hopper is rotated by means of a geared disc 11 connected through gears 10 mounted on a shaft 9 with a ring gear 8 driven by a periodically operating electric motor 7. The valves 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> are opened and closed at the required times by means of gears 14 and 19 engaging spaced sets of gear teeth 15 and 18 on ring gears 13 and 8.
