Abstract

944,941. Electrophotography. PHOTOSTATIC ENTERPRISES Ltd. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No.38821/59. Drawings to Specification. Heading G2H. [Also in Divisions B5, B8 and H1] A transferable film bearing an electrophotographically-produced visible image, e.g. a label, is produced by coating a base with a temporarybond coating, which is such as to allow a charge to leak away, applying over this a photoconductive insulating film, and, after forming electrophotographically an electrostatic pattern on the photoconductive film, developing the pattern with a developer carrying a pigment substance, and finally stripping the image-bearing film from the base by destroying the temporary bond. By repeating the image-forming and developing steps multicolour images may be obtained. Before or after stripping the photoconductive film bearing the developed image from the base a sealing layer may be applied over the image-bearing film. The base may be of aluminium foil with or without a paper backing, metal, plastic, glass, wood, paper, hardboard or cloth; the temporary adhesive may be animal glue, natural gums and resins, polystyrene, waxes, mineral oil, animal or vegetable fats, greases or oils; and the photoconductive insulating film may be of lead, lead oxide, lead iodide, cadmium selenide, bismuth trioxide, zinc oxide or selenium particles dispersed in a film-forming binder comprising cellulose or cellulose esters or natural or synthetic gums or resins, especially alkyd, silicone, or epoxy resins. The photoconductive film may contain also lead or cobalt naphthenate driers and may also include rutile as an opacifying pigment. The developer may comprise a pigment such as carbon, carbon black, cadmium selenide or cobalt oxide, an alkyd or silicone resin, and cobalt and lead naphthenate driers ball-milled to form a pigment-in-resin dispersion which is itself then dispersed in an insulating liquid such as petroleum solvents, n-pentane, cyclohexane, and fluorochloro-ethanes or -methanes. The sealing layer may be an unpigmented layer of the filmforming synthetic resins specified for the photoconductive film, and may be a preformed layer secured by an adhesive over the image. The image-bearing film may be secured to any desired surface such as a preserving can by applying an adhesive to the surface of the photoconductive film from which the base has been stripped.
