944,795. Filling bottles. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 26, 1962 [Sept. 28, 1961], No. 36615/62. Heading B8T. A filling apparatus, which may form part of a revolving table machine, enables a bottle 1 to be filled with a liquid, for example butane or propane, to a level determined by two members 37, 38 detecting the intensity of radiation, e.g. of neutrons, from a source 36, the member 38 controlling a main inflow valve 6 and the member 37 controlling the raising of a filling head 11 having a valve 22, 33, Fig. 2, which is automatically closed when the filling head is raised. The detectors 37, 38 give an electric signal the power of which varies with the intensity of radiation received from the source 36. As the liquid rises towards the level B in the bottle 1, the radiation received by the detector 38 is decreased until the detector 38 reverses a solenoid 40, thereby reducing the pressure in a compressed air line 42 and closing the inflow valve 6. Liquid then flows to the bottle through a channel 7 throttled at 8, so reducing the rate of filling. As the level C in the bottle is reached, the reduced radiation received by the detector 38 causes a valve 44 to be reversed thereby through a pneumatic valve 46, raising a piston 12 which is secured to the filling head 11. The flow of liquid, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, is cut off automatically as a spring 19 presses the member 33 down on the seal 22 to close the valve. A roller-operated valve 50 subsequently reverses the valve 46 in preparation for the next filling cycle. In a modification, the bottle may be raised to meet the filling-head. Instead of the alternative channel 7, the valve 6 may have an opening, allowing reduced flow. The level of source 36 may be adjustable to enable bottles of different sizes to be filled. The apparatus may be operated hydraulically or electrically.
