Abstract

944,664. Pulse modulation circuits. TELEPHONE & ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES PTY Ltd. Sept. 12, 1961 [Dec. 13, 1960], No. 32703/61. Heading H4L. [Also in Division G1] A pulse width modulator for use in a conveyer belt aggregate weight measuring apparatus (Division G1) has one input which is a voltage of belt deflection dependent magnitude and a second input which comprises pulses the rate of which is dependent on belt speed. The modulator 11 (Fig. 3) comprises an emitter follower stage TR1 the input voltage c (Fig. 2) of which appears at the resistor R1 so that when a transistor TR2 is switched " on " by a pulse from the belt speed indicator (waveform d), a capacitor C is charged to the instantaneous voltage at R1, and at the termination of the pulse, the capacitor C discharges linearly through TR3 and R3 in a time proportional to the instantaneous voltage. Transistors TR5 and TR6 are arranged so that when the emitter of TR5 rises above earth potential, TR5 is switched " on " and TR6 " off " this occurring as soon as capacitor C charges through TR2, and until C is completely discharged. The output of transistor TR6 is thus a series of negative pulses of a duration proportional to the weight dependent input voltage to TR1, and of a frequency equal to that of the belt speed indicator output signal to TR2 (waveform e).
