Abstract
The invention comprises the meso and racemic forms (forms A and B respectively) of 1, 5-bis (4-amidinophenoxy) - pentane 2 - (4 - melaminylphenyl)-1, 3, 2-dithioarsolane dicarboxylates of formula: <FORM:0944638/C2/1> They may be prepared by reacting in a liquid medium (preferably water) a salt of 2-(4-melaminylphenyl) - 4, 5 - dicarboxy - 1, 3, 2-dithioarsolane form A or form B (e.g. an alkali metal salt) and a salt of 1, 5-bis (4-amidinophenoxy) pentane, or by reacting the free compounds with each other in an organic solvent such as dimethylsulphoxide. The above compounds possess chemotherapeutic properties and may be used as trypanocidal preparations together with a pharmaceutical carrier. Parenteral preparations may be made as sterile aqueous or non-aqueous solutions, suspensions or emulsions. Specified carrier media include propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, vegetable oils such as olive oil and injectable esters such as ethyl oleate. Other adjuvants such as wetting, emulsifying and dispersing agents may be present.
