A gas-loaded hydraulic accumulator comprises a hollow piston 3 having walls 2 extending to form a skirt and affording positive separation of the liquid and gas mediums contained in the accumulator. The cylinder 1 of the accumulator is formed with a shoulder between which and a sleeve 7 pressed towards the shoulder by a screw-threaded member 9 and a plug 8 are an abutment ring 6, seals 4, and a guide bush 5 engaging the walls of the piston, the top and bottom surfaces of which are subjected to gas, preferably air, and oil pressure, respectively. A passage 10 passes any gas or oil tending to pass the seal to atmosphere. When the liquid approaches a low level in the accumulator, a shoulder 14 on the piston engages the ball 15 of a plunger 16 which is disposed in a housing in an aperture 12 in the cylinder and actuates a switch 11 to operate a pump to recharge the accumulator. Leaking past the plunger is prevented by seals 19, 22. In an alternative construction, the plunger is spring-urged out of engagement with the switch when the piston is away from the switch-operating position.
