Abstract

<PICT:0944337/C3/1> A heterogeneous abradable material, particularly for the inter-stage sealing of turbines, consists of 2.5-10% by weight of dispersed particles of graphite and/or mica in a matrix of porous aluminium, and may be produced by flame spraying. A low-porosity bonding layer of heat resistant material such as molybdenum, chromium, nickel, niobium, tantalum or tungsten may first be applied to the surface to be coated, and this may be followed by one or more layers of the ductile matrix metal of graduated porosity. The material may be attached either to the fixed or to the rotating member of the turbine; it may be deposited directly on to the said part, or may be produced separately and subsequently attached thereto mechanically. As shown in Fig. 3, seal material 12 is attached by key 29 to member 23, a channel 33 being formed by relative motion of member 23 and blade 28.
