Abstract
A surgical drape sheet comprises an extensible, non-tacky, non-toxic flexible film backing inert to liquid disinfectants, water and/or lower molecular weight aliphatic alcohols, the backing being coated on one side with an adhesive which is rendered tacky and skin-adhering when wet by the water or alcohol, said sheet having been sterilized. The backing is transparent, has a dull surface and may be tucked. It consists of a film 0.0015-0.0025 inch thick of polyvinyl chloride plasticized with polyesters of neopentyl glycol and adipic acid, plasticized polyvinylidene chloride, rubber hydrochloride, polyethylene, plasticized polyvinyl formal or butyral resins, or polyvinyl copolymer resins. The adhesive coating is transparent, flexible and extensible and is made of polyvinyl acetate, poly-n-butyl methacrylate, polyvinyl stearate-acetate copolymers, polyethyl acrylate-acrylic acid copolymers or vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer. The backing may be coated with a primer, e.g. partially hydrolized polyvinyl chloride-acetate resin before applying the adhesive. The sheet is packaged with interleaving material in polyethylene coated paper and is sterilized by ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide or is interleaved with and packaged in silicone release coated glassine paper and sterilized in steam. In use, the sheet is placed on a part of the body which has been cleansed or wetted by liquid disinfectant or alcohol which activates the adhesive. The incision is made through the sheet.ALSO:A coated flexible sheet comprises an extensible, non-tacky, non-toxic flexible film backing inert to liquid disinfectants, water and/or lower molecular weight aliphatic alcohols, the backing being coated on one side with an adhesive which is rendered tacky and skin-adhering when wet by the water or alcohol, said sheet having been sterilized. The adhesive coating is transparent, flexible and extensible and is made of polyvinyl acetate, polyn-butyl methacrylate, polyvinyl stearate-acetate copolymers, polyethyl acrylate-acrylic acid copolymers or vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer. The backing may be coated with a primer, e.g. partially hydrolized polyvinyl chloride-acetate resin before applying the adhesive.
