Abstract

944,175. Feeding sheets. RUBERY, OWEN & CO. Ltd. June 29, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 22871/60. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B8] An appliance for lifting and/or holding flexible sheets and other articles by suction derived from the low pressure region in the wake of a flow of compressed air comprises a body 12 in which the air is fed (e.g. by way of inlet tube 11 and ports 22) into an annular chamber 20 bounded by curved walls 13, 19 which converge to a narrow slit 21 from which the air emerges. The members 16, 17 whose curved surfaces 13, 19 define the chamber are interconnected by screws (not shown) by which the width of slit 21 may be adjusted. A flat article or sheet is held in contact with the flat annular surface 24 of member 16, and, when handling flexible sheet material such as paper, the intervening circular space 25 may be covered by a wire mesh grill. The appliance may be used not only to lift but also to hold to itself a moving strip of material passing beneath it. In another form (Fig. 7, not shown) the device may be used to lift other than flat-topped articles.
