Abstract
943,960. Positive clutches. F. A. E. PORSCHE. Sept. 13, 1962 [Sept. 16, 1961], No. 34949/62. Heading F2C. A change-speed gear synchronizing device, in which a toothed shifting sleeve held by a sleeve carrier member rigid with a driving shaft may be engaged with a gear, has a primary friction member co-operating directly with the teeth of the shifting sleeve and a secondary friction member frictionally engaging the sleeve carrier member. Axial movement of a shifting sleeve 6 to engage internal teeth 7 with teeth 8 rigid with a gear 2 freely rotatable on a shaft 1 to which a sleeve carrier 4 is secured, first produces frictional contact between the crests of the teeth 7 and the periphery of a split synchronizing ring 9. The ring 9 moves in the direction of rotation to contact an abutment member 16 which contacts one end of a supporting ring 15, the other end of which moves an outturned end 21 of a clamping band 10 to engage the band frictionally about the hub 19 of the sleeve carrier 4, the other outturned end of band 10 being held against the edge of an aperture 22 in an axial flange 11 of the gear 2. With lack of synchronizm between the clutch elements the band 10 is held against the hub 19 and the supporting ring 15 bows outwards under compression to urge the split ring 9 into contact with the teeth 7, thus preventing positive engagement of the teeth 7 and 8. When synchronizm is attained the ring 15 relaxes and the sleeve 6 may continue to move axially to engagement. In other embodiments, the secondary friction member may expand or contract into contact with an axial flange on the sleeve carrier between the hub and the sleeve carrying teeth or the supporting ring may have an additional conical friction surface engaging a complementary surface on the sleeve carrying member.
