Abstract
943,891. Lasting-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Jan. 25, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 2572/60. Heading A3B. In a toe lasting machine of the "bed" type, having a shoe support and toe wipers, an upwiping member in the form of a flexible toe band is incorporated. The toe band 804 is of flexible plastic material of low coefficient of friction and has a wiping edge 870, Fig. 6. Fluid pressure operated means are provided for effecting the upwiping, overwiping and "bedding" operations of the machine. Toe band 804 is linked to operating pistons 824, Fig. 3, its forward movement being limited by the engagement of an adjustable bar 860 with an abutment 864 on wiper head 40. Initial movement of a hand lever 54, Fig. 11, closes a switch 910 to energize solenoids 726 and 908. Energization of solenoid 726 results in the admission of fluid beneath piston 704 to raise wiper head 40 through links 354 and 360. Upward movement of wiper head 40 is at a regulated speed determined by the setting of a needle valve 750 which controls the flow of oil from above piston 704 into a reservoir 740. At the same time energization of solenoid 908 shifts valve 906 to admit fluid through a pressure regulator valve 904 and valve 900, to cylinders 826 to advance and close toe band 804 to a predetermined operative position relative to the toe end of the shoe, Fig. 6. Due to the retarding effect of valve 750, toe band 804 assumes its operative position before appreciable upward movement of wiper head 40 has occurred and performs an upwiping operation on the upper. When wipers 50 have reached the plane of the insole the upwiping operation is stopped by slight displacement of push button 202, on hand lever 54, to the left to close switch 232 or by engagement of lever 354 with an adjustable stop. Closure of switch 232 energizes solenoid 274 to activate the power over-wipe by admitting fluid to valve-operating cylinder 748, valve 746 being immediately shifted to closed position, preventing further movement of piston 704 and stopping upward movement of wiper head 40. Wipers 50 may now be advanced and closed by means of power actuator 102 under servo control in response to movement of hand lever 54. After the over-wiping operation the push button 202 is depressed further to the left to effect power bedding by means of actuator 372 and with a force determined by pressure regulator valve 218 under the direct control of push button 202. Admission of fluid to actuator 372 through conduit 380, to which valve operating cylinders 723, 902 are connected, causes valves 900 and 722 to connect cylinder 826 and piston 704 to exhaust. Thus, when head 40 is moved downwardly the pressure of toe band 804 against the upper will be relieved and the toe band retracted, avoiding the tendency of the band to "down-wipe" and loosen the upper. Specification 918,023 is referred to.
