Abstract
In the separation by distillation of a mixture of C8 aromatic hydrocarbons in a series of separate distillation steps, the overhead vapours from one distillation are condensed in indirect heat exchange with the mixture in another distillation step, thereby providing the distillation heat for that step. In a preferred embodiment, a mixture of ethylbenzene and xylenes is passed to fractionator 2 where ethylbenzene is separated overhead. The xylene bottoms pass to fractionator 7 where ortho-xylene is obtained as bottoms and separated from any higher boiling material in fractionator 9. The xylene overhead from column 7 is passed through the reboilers of columns 2, 9 and 13 in which latter any lighter material is removed from the condensed xylene overhead from column 7. The overheads from column 7 are preferably maintained at 30-130 p.s.i.g. Preferably xylenes from column 13 are crystallized to separate para-xylene and the remainder isomerized and the isomerizate introduced into column 7 by line 6. <PICT:0943890/C3/1>
