To prevent wear of the head 1 and of the coating on the tape 2 during rapid winding and rewinding, vacuum means 15 are applied to a cavity 6 formed by the block 3, the tape 2 and side-walls 5 to hold the tape clear of the head 1. The sidewalls 5 also guide the tape 2 laterally and excessive friction of the back of the tape against the plane surfaces of the block is prevented by the projections 4, 9, 13.
